A Rebuke of Religious Nationalism

Pastor McShaffrey preached this sermon as a rebuke of religious nationalism on Palm Sunday from John 12:12-21 (i.e., Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem) in hope that it would deliver well-meaning American Christians from falling into the same temptation of the patriotic Jews who killed Jesus. Many people say, “I would believe in God if he would show me some sign…”

Such people are lying because the light of Christ has shone forth in the darkness, but men love darkness and hate the light (John 1:45, 3:19-21).

The seven signs recorded by John in his Gospel were written not convince naysayers of God’s existence, but to manifest the glory and goodness of Christ to his disciples that they might strengthen their faith and have life in his name (John 20:30-31).
